In preparing to move, I realized that I didn’t create a permanent space for the final look of our nursery. And so, I wanted to share with you all before we start packing things up! Last month I posted our guest bedroom reveal which carries more of the neutral palate I gravitate towards. Our nursery, on the other hand, evolved to have more pattern, play and color than any other room in our home. I love it. It also ended up having the most DIY components–which I had more time for before Josie came along.

Getting Started

I started with some of my favorite fabrics and let those set the tone for the room–a colorful bird tapestry-like fabric and a blue/green floral. I’ve actually had these fabrics for years (since I graduated college) so had to do some digging to find more of it! Truly amazing what you can find on the internet. I ended up using the bird tapestry fabric to recover a foot stool and the floral for curtain panels.

DIY and Facebook Marketplace

The curtains in the nursery were initially 2 panels my Grandma sewed for my first apartment out of college (!!). Like I said earlier, I loved this fabric but needed more. Searching high and low across the internet for “blue green floral fabric” sent me to a wholesale fabric distributor. I was so happy to find what I needed and ordered  the extra yardage for 2 additional panels.

The rocking chair and footstool were Facebook Marketplace finds that I got for $75. What a scene it must have been when a 7 month pregnant lady rolls up to your house and tries to fit glider into a Honda CRV (thank you to the nice family for helping me). I loved that the glider chair matched the design of the crib (Jenny Lind) and had a vintage look to it. With a little WD40, it worked as good as new. I recovered the footstool with the bird tapestry fabric which was a pretty quick process that only required a staple gun.

Practical Use and Meaningful Decor

It’s a balance right? Practical and fun. I really wanted to bring in furniture and decor that would last through the little years but also be fun and playful for this stage in Josie’s life. I didn’t end up getting a changing table — just a dresser with a changing station added on top that can be removed.  This way I can reuse the dresser as Josie grows. The shelves in the nursery hold all her books and toys.  They are on display where she can reach them and with a steady rotation of moving some toys up and away, she has yet to get bored. She also has a little table and her easel in here which we move around depending on how we are playing that day.

I wanted to bring an element of travel and adventure into the room because I traveled a lot when I was pregnant with Josie. We went to so many fun events together. To commemorated the places we went, I sourced coffee table books from the various cities we traveled to that serve as shelving decor. Josie also loves to flip through the pictures of these books!

The Finished Look

It’s wild that we brought her home to this space 16 months ago now! How quickly time has flown…Here is our nursery in our current apartment, all sources are linked here.
