Living in a small space has meant that we see and experience everything in our home every single day. So I’m very tuned into the functionality and aesthetic of our home. There were a few things going on around our kitchen sink that I wanted to work on: 1) our kitchen sink looks right out at our neighbors – who are kind and friendly but we needed a little more privacy 2) we needed more counter space. we had a produce stand that sat on our counter and took up about 1/3 of it. prepping dinner, drying dishes and holding produce wasn’t working together anymore. 3) all the items sitting out didn’t go together. I wanted a more cohesive look that also met our family’s needs.

Starting with the privacy situation first, I knew a sheer linen cafe curtain would be the way to go. In our previous kitchens we had a full length, top down, window treatment. However, in our current home it wouldn’t be as practical and be a little too “heavy” for the size of the kitchen and sink area. I also didn’t want to have to have the window completely blocked off in order to achieve the privacy goal. I ended up going with a outside mount for the curtain rod and found the linen curtains on Etsy. I just love how light filtering and airy it turned out are. We now have just enough privacy while still allowing us to enjoy the beautiful sunlight.

Next up was our coffee station. Previously it was on the right hand side of the sink and we had both our grinder and drip coffee machine out. Ideally I wanted them to match but the SMEG drip coffee machine was out of our budget. I ended up finding a used matching SMEG drip coffee machine on Ebay (an awesome steal!) and moved everything over since it made more since to have our produce baskets on the right (more space).

Finally, when searching for inspiration for our produce storage solution I came across the shaker peg rail and decided I could hang produce baskets on them. I knew I wanted the rail in an unfinished oak to add a rustic touch and found the perfect ones (and perfect length too – no cutting involved) through Uncommon Goods. The baskets came all the way from Portugal and it was a fun waiting game to see if they were going to make it!

We’ve been living with this update now for about a month and I’m so glad we committed to doing it! It is much more functional for our small kitchen and it makes me so happy every time I wake up and get a hot cup of coffee or am standing there washing dishes.
