Hardwood floors or laminate tile seem to be the most common flooring we have had in our rentals. I get it, it’s low maintenance, doesn’t absorb stains from tenants and doesn’t need to be replaced as often. The most common color of stain our hardwood floors have been in rental units is that lovely orange color that I would love to refinish (it’s always on my wish list of projects when we move into places that have this but obviously isn’t feasible to take on). This means that we have added large area rugs to almost all our rooms to provide some cushion and comfort. I like having a soft place for my feet to land in the morning and a trick to hide some of the dust that some how accumulates exponentially when you have hard flooring. The benefit of having area rugs we love is that we can easily take them with us from one apartment to the next. I have tried to be very strategic about picking out rugs so that they are neutral enough to last for a long time, are cost conscious for the quality and size, and create a layer of cozy in our space that ties everything together.
Natural fiber rugs are my favorite (wool, sisal, jute) but can be really expensive for area rug size! There are some synthetic fiber rugs I’ve come across that don’t look cheap and hold up well but it’s important to be particular, do your research or find a company that does free returns if you are ordering online. I’ve purchased too many synthetic fiber rugs online only to return them because they looked and felt less than spectacular. That being said, there are good options out there for budget area rugs that I’ve included here for you all.
Quick Tips for Rug Sizing
– There should be about 4 to 8 inches of floor bordering each side of the rug
– All the legs of your furniture should sit on the area rug
