Living in our small Moffitt Cottage has showed me how to work with awkward spaces. The design of the home was built without entryways. Moffitt was all about efficiency in his design and deemed some “extra” spaces (i.e. hallways and entryways) too excessive so created his homes without them. The main entry to our home comes right into our kitchen, making it a bit of an interesting logistical situation. Keys, coats, mail, and shoes often become scattered throughout our kitchen and dining space. I dream of a large entryway with a coat closet and room for a long console table, but for the time being we make do with a very small entry and have found ways to make it functional. Instead of being able to have a traditional console under a mirror we went with a small shelf and hooks next to the the door.
To add intrigue to this space I added a pretty piece of art and a catchall for keys, glasses, etc. Fresh florals and a great candle always help bring any space to life in my option and definitely set the scene since that is the first thing you see when you walk in. I’ll be playing around with different floral arrangements here as the warmer months arrive. If you can swing it in your entryway, lighting can also make a huge difference so a small accent lamp or updated flush mount can be a big improvement.
